Rumi Darwaza/Roomi Gate Lucknow
Rumi Darwaza, one of the heritage and tourist attractions in Lucknow, is an amazing piece of architecture surrounded by Bara Imambara and Chota Imambara. With the height of 60 feet, it was once considered as the entrance to Old Lucknow City. Built in 1784 under the rule of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula, it’s a structure that resembles to a gateway built in ancient Constantinople.
For tourists, it’s mesmerizing to see the Rumi Darwaza / Roomi Gate adorned with wonderfully carved flowers and designs. Its top structure is in an umbrella-shaped to which a staircase leads. Though anyone can visit Rumi Darwaza at any time of the year, no permission is granted to climb this staircase.
Being one of the finest examples of Awadhi architectural style, it is primarily built using red sandstone and bricks with a coating of lime. An interesting fact pertaining to its history is that it was constructed along with Bara Imambara and Chota Imambara by Nawabs as a part of the Food for Work programme when the region faced a severe famine.
Rumi Darwaza situated in the heart of Lucknow usually faces everyday traffic of Lajpatnagar, Husainabad. Though it remains busy and crowded all day long, it gives a majestic look when illuminated in the late evening. The essence of this place is amazing and is the best place to visit for hangouts, photoshoots, and even for morning and evening walks. So, Rumi Darwaza is not only a historical place to be preserved but also has become a logo for the city of Lucknow.
