Lucknow Zoo, also known as Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Garden, is the largest zoo in Lucknow. Spreading over 71.6 acres, its establishment was an idea given by Sir Harcourt Butler, the then Governor of the State.
History of Lucknow Zoo
Established in 1921 in honor of the visit of the Prince of Wales, Lucknow Zoo is also known as Prince of Wales Zoological Garden. Constructed between 1921 to 1926, with the total incurred cost being Rs. 2,08,800, it has a total of 26 buildings along with cages. In 1936, the main gate named “Sir Ludovic Porter Gate” opening to the Narahi side was constructed. The Uttar Pradesh Government renamed “Prince of Wales Zoological Gardens Trust, Lucknow” to “Lucknow Prani Udyan” in 2001.
Major Attractions of Lucknow Zoo
You can see around 72 reptiles, 298 birds, and 438 mammals belonging to 97 different species. Lucknow Zoo is one of the only two zoos in India which are home to the orangutan. Among the significant elements of Lucknow Zoo, toy train, vintage train, and State Museum Lucknow attract around 11-12 lakhs of visitors annually. The toy train has a track of 1.5 kilometers long and provides rides from Chandrapuri station to almost all sections of the zoo. The vintage train is a British-era train that was discarded and shifted from Maharajganj to the zoo. Lucknow Zoo is a great place to learn about animals and have a fun day with family and friends.
Lucknow Zoo Timings and Entry fees
Lucknow Zoo is open on all weekdays and weekends except on Monday and on Holi festival. The opening timings of zoo are different for different period of seasons. From February to April timing is 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, May to July is 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, August to October 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, and November to January timing is 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. The entry fee for children between 5 to 12 years is INR 40 per head, INR 80 per head for adults (above 12 years of age) and teachers. Per head entry fees for video camera is INR 100, which is not mandatory and is based on visitors choice of using video camera or not.

There are two types of tickets – normal ticket and package ticket:
Normal Ticket: This ticket includes entry to the zoo, the aquarium, the nocturnal house, and the interpretation center. Explore diverse animal exhibits, learn about underwater wonders, discover nocturnal creatures, and gain insights into conservation efforts.
Package Ticket: Upgrade your experience with the package ticket! In addition to all the inclusions of the normal ticket, you’ll also enjoy a fun and convenient ride on the zoo train. Travel through different animal zones and get unique perspectives on the exhibits. The package ticket cost Rs 100 for adults (above 12 years); and Rs 50 for a child.

Lucknow Zoo Timings During Covid:
Entry timing was divided into three-time slots 08:30 am to 10:30 am, 11:30 am to 01:30 pm, and 03:00 pm to 05:00 pm. The gap between these three slots was being used for sanitization purposes. Only 500 persons were allowed to enter in each slot. Entry for pregnant women, children below 10 years, and senior citizens above 65 years were barred in the zoo. The thermal screening was mandatory for allowed persons.
